Favourite Place to Relax and Unwind by Jackie Collins
Is there anywhere better than relaxing and unwinding by an azure blue swimming pool, surrounded by lightly swaying palm trees. I am lucky enough to have my own pool, and it’s a haven of relaxation. Who needs to swim when I can lie on an inflatable pool bed, sipping a delicious cold glass of sangria, thinking about all the future characters I plan to create.
People often ask me how I get the inspiration for my characters, and I like to think that they just come to me, all ready to take me on a trip.
I write in longhand, and when I am writing I have no idea what is going to happen next. Some writers plot and plan—they have charts of where their characters are going and what will happen to them along the way. I cannot write like that. I want my characters to create their own paths as I write them.
In my new book “The Santangelos” I had no clue what was going to happen next. Every day I would sit down with a pen and paper and simply go for it! Lucky led the way as usual: she is an inspirational character to write—bold and smart, kick-ass and beautiful. Nobody screws with Lucky.
I love writing strong women, because when I was growing up and reading Harold Robbins and other male authors, the women were either in the bedroom or the kitchen. Sex or cooking.
No way! My women rule, and that’s the way it should be.
