Treat Yourself to a Bookation by SJV
Where and when do you do your very best reading?
You know, the hunker down, turn off the TV, look away from twitter, ignore the door bell, ignore your friends reading?
The #commute? Sunday? In the bath (and before you judge, yes, it’s a thing….), in bed? On the beach? Under your desk at school/work (and, yes, that is also, absolutely, a thing…)?
Or, like me, do you treat yourself to a whole week off work once a year to nail the TBR Pile of Dreams? Every year, without fail, for the past 15 years, I’ve booked time off work, a Bookation if you will, and I absolutely blinking love it.
If the sun shines, I’ll take to my stoop, bucket of diet coke by my side, at 7.39am each morning and (bar the occasional comfort break) refuse to come indoors again till the sun sets.
If it pours down, you’ll find me, falling into a near feral state by the end of Day 5, slumped on the sofa, wearing the same PJ’s I put on on Day 1, with a glazed look and a slight hum about my person.
Happy. Content. Smug. Cause that’s the thing isn’t it? Yes, you could be scuba diving in the Maldives. You could trek to Machu Picchu. You could mini break in Paris, Portsmouth or Portugal with your family/friends/insignificant other, but none of the above will allow 10 hours of solid reading a day will they? No. No they will not. And I know they won’t, cause I’ve tried.
There’s always a beautiful statue/sunset/Solero to instagram. Or an obligatory 3 course romantic meal to endure. Or a quick (not quick AT ALL) round of Trivial Pursuit or Charades to ‘enjoy’ isn’t there? So listen, my Tip of the Day is Do It. Whether it’s just for one day, a long weekend or a whole blissful week, book some time off whatever you normally do between the hours of 9-5 and just read. I promise you, you’ll never regret it. And your TBR pile will thank you.
